American Indian students from MMSD win national Intertribal Science Bowl
A team of five American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES)
students from the Madison Metropolitan School District is the champion
of the First Annual Intertribal Middle School Science Bowl (IMSSB) held
in New Mexico late last month.
The IMSSB brought together teams of American Indian, Alaska Native and First Nations
students in grades 6-8 to compete in a fast-paced, competitive format that tested
students’ knowledge in all areas of math and science. The ten teams from eight
states across the nation competed against each other over two days; the MMSD students
went undefeated to finish alone in first place.
The team is made up of students from three MMSD middle schools and five tribal nations:
The team competition was held in conjunction with the National American Indian
Science and Engineering Fair in Albuquerque, New Mexico. IMSSB winners now go on
to Washington, D.C. to compete in the National Science Bowl, which will take place
April 27 – May 2. Students will also compete in a Hydrogen Fuel Cell Car Competition.

The Madison AISES chapter is a district-wide student organization. The mission of AISES
is to substantially increase the representation of American Indian and Alaskan Natives
in engineering, science and other technological disciplines. In addition to the Science Bowl,
the team members participate in AISES activities that meet for two hours every other Sunday.
This spring, AISES students will be working in the UW Arboretum helping to restore the
mounds and moving trails that are too close to the mounds.
