On Saturday October 9th 2021, the State of Texas celebrated its Inaugural Indigenous Peoples Day
in Texas on the south steps of the State Capitol building. Members of many tribes showed up to attend
or take part in this special and long awaited celebration.
The celebration began with an opening prayer by Lipan Apache
Tribal Council Vice-Chairman Dr. Robert Soto, and was followed by Lipan Apache Tribal Council
Chairman Bernard Barcena, who made a statement on the relationship between Texas Tribes and the
various governmental entities who have ruled our state for nearly two centuries. The Lipan Drum Huisache Creek
Singers then performed for the event's attendees.
The Tribe was well
represented that day, with at least 10 tribal members either taking part or in attendance on
ancestral Lipan Apache Tribal land.
